Tags are labels you apply to policies, stakeholders, and other content in PolicyNote to categorize and organize your work. They show up throughout the platform in filters, exports, reports, and alert views so a consistent tagging approach makes everything easier to find and slice later.
Common uses: flagging bills by issue area, marking stakeholders by relationship tier, identifying policies that need a specific action, or grouping content for reporting purposes.
Creating a Tag
Tags are created centrally in Settings and then available to apply anywhere in the platform.
- Go to Account > Settings > Tag Management.
- Click + Create Tag.
- Enter the tag name and click Submit.
The tag is immediately available to apply to policies, stakeholders, and other content across your workspace.
Editing or Deleting a Tag
- On the Tag Management page, find the tag you want to change.
- Click the three dots (⋮) next to it.
- Select Edit or Delete.
- If editing, update the name and click Submit. The updated name will reflect everywhere the tag has been applied.
- If deleting, confirm when prompted.
Before deleting: you can only delete a tag if it has no content associated with it. If the tag is currently applied to any policies, stakeholders, or other items, you'll need to remove it from all of those first before the delete option will work. Once deleted, the tag can't be restored, so if there's any chance you'll need it again, consider renaming it instead.
Applying Tags in Bulk
Managing tags in Settings (creating, editing, deleting) is done one at a time. However, you can apply or remove tags across multiple policies at once directly from Discover or within a Project:
- Select multiple policies using the checkboxes.
- Use the bulk actions menu to add or remove tags across all selected policies in one step.
This is the fastest way to tag a large set of bills without opening each one individually.
Troubleshooting
Tag didn't update everywhere after editing? Refresh the page. If it's still showing the old name, contact support at policynotesupport@fiscalnote.com.
Can't find a tag you applied? Check that you're not filtered to a specific tag set that excludes it. Tags are sorted alphabetically on the Tag Management page if you need to verify it exists.
